WHEN MUSIC IS PLAYING:

“When Music is Playing, be quiet stay put don’t clap until the whole piece is over” is a modular piece of chamber music for 5 players and electronics. The piece is about institutional snobbery, class and virtuosity. The form of the piece is built around a sample player in MAXMSP selecting samples from a prerecorded voiceover. The voice over is mainly comprised of snippets from a NAXOS guide for how “new classical music fans” should behave in a concert situation. The samples selected is different every time and the players are expected to play different modules based on what samples they are hearing.

“When Music is Playing, be quiet stay put don’t clap until the whole piece is over” exists in 3 versions, one version scored for 5 string players and electronics premiered at Nordic Music Days in Reykjavik in 2016, one version for solo guitar and electronics performed by Rudolf Terland Bjørnerem at NMH in 2015 and one version for electronics, 4 recorders and two guitars, performed by the Austrian ensemble SNIM and premiered 15.10.2015 in Echoraum in Vienna. Supported by The Danish Arts Council.
